Abstract
Food is an essential component for the survival of human beings. The past occurrences of famine caused by drought, war, blight, and population growth, led to the development of genetic engineering technology to develop herbicide and insect resistant plants that would lead to increased crop yields (Jahan, 2017). The purpose of this laboratory experiment was to test the presence of genetically modified organisms in tortilla chips available in the United States. The hypothesis for this study was tortilla chips in the United States contain GMOs. Genetic modification in tortilla chips was determined by amplifying the CaMV 35S promoter and NOS terminator region by PCR. The results from this experiment showed the presence of genetically modified DNA in the tortilla chips food sample. These results are in agreement with the existing literature on the presence of GMOs in corn products around the world (Ateş Sönmezoğlu & Keskin, 2015). The implication of these findings is that all tortilla chips available in the United States should be clearly labelled as GMOs to make consumers aware of this fact.
Detection of Genetically Modified DNA in Tortilla Chips (Doritos)
The rate of metabolism and organ function, which determine the survival of human beings, depends on the availability and quality of food intake in the body. The frequent occurrence of famines caused by drought, war, blight, and population growth, led to the conclusion that if various measures were not implemented, then food scarcity would be a common phenomenon around the world (Jahan, 2017). This proposition led to current innovations such as genetic modifications to improve the food supply that would meet the demands of a growing population. The modification of plant genes has led to increased crop yields, although the debate about the health and environmental safety of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is still ongoing, eliciting mixed reactions from different quarters (Jahan, 2017). These concerns about the safety of GMOs has led to the formulation and adoption of various regulations by several countries such as the United States, which producers and manufacturers must follow.
