Introduction
Over the last few years, the commercial production of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) has ignited unprecedented debates with some experts singling them out as the greatest failure in the history of capitalism. The controversy associated with GMOs arises from the numerous risk factors that correlate with their consumption (Bratspies, 2013). For instance, several studies have associated GMOs with serious health risks such as infertility, accelerated aging, faulty insulin regulation, immune problems, and adverse changes in the gastrointestinal system as well as major organs (Weirich, 2007). GMOs are part of the capitalist food production system, which for the last few decades has been turning agriculture into an industry. A capitalist system is usually divided into two classes, which include the capitalist class and the working class. The capitalist class possesses all the means of production whereas the working class provides the labor required by the capitalist class in exchange for wages. Additionally, a capitalist economy is mainly controlled by businesses, which make decisions regarding the use of resources (Fieser, 2015). Although a capitalist system has minimal government interference, there are laws that regulate the production and the sale of genetically engineered products. These laws subject GMOs to comprehensive scrutiny and evaluation to ensure that they meet the required safety standards. This paper intends to use the utilitarianism theory to examine whether GMOs are suitable for human consumption.
