Executive Summary
The Government Pharmaceutical Organization (GPO) is a manned enterprise in Thailand. It was established o 5th August 1966 when a regent named Princess Srinagarindra put the royal signature on the GPO Act. GPO operates under the rules and regulations set by the Ministry of Public Health in manufacturing pharmaceutical products. The sale and distribution of these products both inside and outside Thailand is also the responsibility of this entity. The future of pharmaceuticals is highly dependent on trends and forces at both international and grass-root levels. Therefore, the GPO needs to evaluate its operation strategies to accommodate the ever-changing scope of curing and treating diseases to remain relevant. In the pharmaceutical sector, conclusive results and future projections can only be accurately obtained by observing trends in health and disease mutations and driving factors behind the said phenomena. Telephone interviews on stakeholders, employees, and patients who receive GPO services were conducted then transcribed to provide an insight on trends and drivers of change. Secondary sources were helpful, particularly in forming the basis for the research. Through the interviews, drivers that emanate from trends were established. The drivers were both opportunities and threats, while others came out as constants in the future of GPO. The drivers of change presented in this report are likely to form future trends of how the pharmaceutical space is being reshaped. The GPO should consider how these trends are most likely to reshape the products and services offered. This is because new problems will need new solutions and new capabilities to deal with them. The dynamic business environment presents new opportunities that managers can take advantage of or develop new strategies to deal with emerging threats. Sticking to old methods might lead to the company's elimination from the market as demand for medical products keeps changing over time.
Introduction
The government of Thailand was experiencing a great challenge of importing medication for use within its borders. Quality healthcare forms one of the fundamentals of human rights. Therefore, this need pushed for the need to establish an institution that will focus on the production of drugs to boost the existing options for a better healthcare system for the Thai population (Chetthamrongchai, 2020). Being the number one advocate of better health for its subjects, the government formed the Government Pharmaceutical Organization to satisfy this role. Under the leadership of a medical practitioner, Tua Lophanukrom, a Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plant was set up to deal with pharmaceutical products such as medicines, antiretrovirals, preventive medicines, and a wide variety of chemical tests kits as well as natural products (Pulsiri, 2020). Setting and running the plant aimed to meet the demand for medicine in the country, improve medical reserves and supply, and put the country in a better position to handle emergencies such as the present Covid-19 and its associated variants (Qadry, Sharma & Singh, 2s019). The plant sits on 47 acres in Rajthevi Bangkok, which currently serves as the Headquarters' of GPO. The plant operations are structured in a business-like manner, and the first-ever chairman of the board of directors was Dr. Tau. Methodology
The method of data collection that we used to shed light on the topic was telephone interviews. Telephone interviews were the preferred means of data collection because the interview was in control of the exercise. Additional questions were asked in areas not answered conclusively or when the interviewer needed more information. Practitioners, government officials in the ministry of health, legal policy formulators and enforcers, and consumers of the medicines were used as informants to obtain a rich pool of data.
Practitioners were those in the pharmaceutical field involved in production, marketing, and logistics. These parties were additionally involved in ensuring that quality standards are met in the capacity of researchers and government officials. Legal and policy formulators were used to provide regulation, compliance, and registration information. Consumers who form the general population were used to relay information on their experiences on the products and services offered by the GPO. Secondary research was of great use in forming the basis of my research. The data I gathered from my primary research enabled me to establish future trends and drivers of GPO. Relationships were obtained from the data were drawn, and solutions were recommended.
Future Drivers and Trends
The feedback from the telephone interviews revealed that three key drivers are likely to cause a shift in the way GPO carries out its operations. Most of the interviewed people pointed out the importance of a sustainable healthcare system and were concerned about the industry's future.
