1 Introduction
Uber is a multinational company that operates in 70 countries. It is known for its success in the peer-to-peer ride sharing services and in 2017, the company completed four billion rides (Bhuiyan, 2018). In the wake of several reports of misconduct related to Uber drivers, the company has employed tactics to reduce the occurrence of possible future misconduct practices among its drivers. The company is dedicated to putting safety first. As such, they have launched several safety features that will help Uber build a reputation as a rusted ridesharing provider. Though there is no publicly open data showing the number of criminal cases related to the ridesharing services, the police reports and CNN analysis showed that there are approximately 103 Uber drives in the U.S who have been accused of abusing or sexually assaulting passengers in the last four years (O’Brien, Black, Devine, & Griffin, 2018). Therefore, the safety features app innovation comes at a good time (Whitwam, 2018).
Let us consider the current safety feature. Passengers need to first install the Uber app in their phones and when requesting a ride, they are required to put their destination in this app. Uber will come up with a recommended route for the driver. While awaiting the driver, the passenger is able to monitor and check their real-time location on the map and determine the amount of time needed for the Uber driver to make it to their location. This could be used to create safety features. If the driver happens to deviate from the route for more than 150 seconds, the passenger will receive a warning message. In such a case, two options will be provided 1) Report the driver 2) continue monitoring the driver.
2 Problem Statement
1 Overview
The argument raised on misconduct in ridesharing is sometimes met with claims that ridesharing helps improve ease and equity in the transport industry. However, regardless of the probable improvements, these forms of misconduct not only have negative impact on the passenger and the company but might as well impact the economy of shared mobility. The increase in the cases of misconduct in the ridesharing services has attracted the attention of scholars who are beginning to investigate these issues. To tackle the misconduct of drivers, Uber terminates any driver whose ratings are below a certain mark (Cook, 2015). However, some people question whether doing this is enough to curtail the misconduct of certain group of drivers. In light of the current technological advancement, one would assume that racism and sexism in the cab industry would be evaded. However, this has not been the case. According to a recent study, it was reported that black passengers who requested Uber services faced a longer waiting period than their white counterparts. Consequently, they faced a higher rate of cancellation (White, 2016).
A significant number of Uber drivers have been complaining about the high operation cost and low pay. As such, these drivers are purposefully lengthening their trips in order to earn more. These drivers deviate from the shorter routes and take longer ones that require more time and miles. The Uber payment system pays drivers more for the distance covered in a drive rather than the time. As a result, the driver is paid more regardless of the amount paid by the passenger.
