Quality gurus from America and Japan have taken the initiative of enhancing quality in business organizations by various approaches. From the information provided, it can be identified that quality essential in every business. Though Quality has its own cost, quality services and goods eliminate other costs related with poor services. Poor services cause unwanted, unforeseen and unexpected costs. To eliminate this costs, proper planning actions need to be implemented by the management to ensure quality is achieved. The article discusses more on the approaches provided by the quality gurus and various method of implementing the approaches. This essay analyzes major elements and aspects that are provided in the article. Major learning points are outlined as depicted from the quality gurus. From the article, major statements regarding quality has been mentioned and this has been outlined also in the essay. Additionally, proponents of the quality gurus has been analyzed in the essay to gain much knowledge about what quality entails. The essay further goes deep in establishing the practicability of the aspects from the quality gurus. Learning reflections and implications of quality are also outlined in the essay.
Key learning points
Deming, one of the quality gurus introduces a framework for attaining quality in an organization. Deming considers establishment and adaptation of quality as continuous aspects in any business organization. The 14 points of management are a framework for guiding the management on how to tackle the quality issue. Creating a purpose for change and providing the suitable environment for change are the pillars of all the framework provided by the Deming. As per the guidelines provided, quality should be on the forefront despite much anticipated adherence to organization structures (Tari et al., 2007). Deming further remarks that in additional to these guideline, action should then follow in provision of quality. Activities included by Deming in the action plan stipulate that the process of quality improvement is continuous.
On the other hand, Dr. Joseph Juran insists on quality from a different dimension. Management of an organization should set the goals and objectives. These objectives should be well outlined and be incorporated in the day to day activities. Juran remarks that quality to be achieved has to undergo three cyclic processes: planning, control and improvement. Identification of customers and meeting their demands is the major component that guides quality planning. Quality improvement is obtained from the feedbacks obtained from customers.
Quality enhancement is demonstrated wide by Feigenbaum. Quality has to be controlled at all levels. The concept of quality control should extend beyond the management function to cater for more aspects in every aspect. Quality is enabled at different checkpoints, from customer specifications to design and assembly part. Quality enhancement is vital due to customer satisfaction and eventually creating loyalty. As he continues, prevention costs, appraisal costs are some of the costs related to quality that must be incurred by any organization. However, other costs such as internal failure, external failure are prevented through quality control.
Another guru who advocates for quality is Dr. Ishikawa. Dr. Ishikawa demonstrates use of diagrams and charts to illustrate the importance of enhancing quality. Pareto charts are used to prioritize quality while the cause and effect diagram are used to show reason for cause of deviations in organizations. Ishikawa demonstrates that there are future implications in failure to entail quality (Hawkins et al., 2012). In his cause and effect diagram, Ishikawa demonstrates that problems arising from a product are as a result of the equipment in the organization and work methods applied are as a result of measurement procedure applied in the organization. Ishikawa concentrates much on what propagates production of quality services and goods.
Other quality gurus are also discussed in the article. Dr. Genichi and Dr. Shigeo have made enormous effort towards achievement of quality. The main contribution towards quality is perceived mainly in design and making of new items in the industry. They have a major pursuit in which they claim that a proper mechanism should be adopted by implementation team to avoid other cost such as external costs which may have other accruing costs such as dissatisfaction costs (Tari et al., 2007).
Relevant statements to the session
The article contains statement worth reckoning. Some of the statements are outlined by the quality gurus while others are generated from their generalization. Deming denotes in his analysis that quality is a cycle not a discrete process. He stipulates that an organization with discrete quality strategies, then the organization is poised to fail in the pursuit of providing quality. Juran on his side remarks that organization may find it difficult to implement quality strategies. The need for quality change may emanate from customer dissatisfaction (Gill, 2009). The organization may, then later incur other costs from poor services threatening the business.
An important statement generated from Feigenbaum denotes that a quality system is attained through agreed company-wide structures integrating all the stakeholders in the system. All the workforce, machinery and workflow in a quality system must be geared towards achievement of quality.
Measurement of cost of quality may be a hindrance to the process of implementing quality. The cost may be perceived to be high since no immediate response would be seen. As denoted in the article, cost of quality may appear to be high, though, this may be deceiving.
Critical analysis
From the article, major aspects concerning quality can be deduced. These emanates from the quality gurus statements. As illustrated from the article, the quality gurus are all concerned with provision of quality services and goods. Though with different approach to achieve quality, all the quality gurus emphasize quality necessity. Schouten et al., (2008) further denotes that quality and quality improvement are inevitable in the modern organization set up. The rationale for stipulating that is derived from the fact that the current business world is poised with competition and each and every organization has to stay put in enhancing quality.
Process of attaining quality is a planned occasion. As stipulated by Deming, quality is achieved by following the stipulated guideline. Failure to abide by the guideline, the desired quality won’t be achieved. Deming introduces 14 major points which are the guidelines for achieving quality in an organization. The guidelines provides a framework through which an organization should follow to ensure they are on course to achieve quality. The guideline include providing a rationale for improvement, adopting new philosophy and so forth. Dr. Joseph Juran on his side denotes that quality is an issue which requires planning and organizational deliberation (Tari et al., 2007). Goals and targets are important in fulfilling the objective.
The process of achieving quality is hindered by many obstacles. Dr. Joseph Juran, one of the quality gurus, further remarks that the process of quality cost measurement can be attributed to many problems experienced in quality delivery. As further denoted by Gill (2009), production of quality services and goods has its own major costs. For the organizations which are skeptical in risk taking, the process of quality improvement may be a challenge (Schouten et al., 2008) denotes. Quality services and products are gained through struggle and the quality implementation cost should not act as hindrance.
From the article, it can be established that quality achievement must be streamlined by the management. The organization and its management must ensure that quality is achieved through its work methods. As outlined by Juran, the organization must be in the forefront to ensure that quality enhancement is taking place.
Through these deductions from the article holds, generalization provided by the quality gurus does not hold at all times. At some of the instances, the guidelines provided may not yield the expected results as per the indication of the quality gurus. For instance, implementation of a new system of production may not only be effective even through considered to be of high quality. A new system may pose a lot of challenges even with the stipulated specifications due to other related problems. The cost of implementation may add up to the cost of inconvenience and the firm may be unable to...
