Challenges in Managing a Restaurant Operation
New York State policies have an impact on the management of restaurant operations. One of the legal challenges facing restaurant managers is employee accommodations. According to the Human Rights Law passed by the NYC council, employers should offer its employees reasonable accommodations to those who require it because of religious reasons, domestic violence victims, and those with disabilities. Failure to adhere to NYCHRL regulations may result in the manager being liable for engagement in unlawful discriminatory practices. Such a formalized process exposes the managers to an increased likelihood of an NYCHRL violation. When the manager is not careful when handling accommodation requests by employees under NYCHRL, it could lead to legal issues. Dealing with this challenge will include employers engaging in a cooperative dialogue with those requesting reasonable accommodation. It involves the production of a written final determination that helps identify accommodation denied or granted.
The other issue is an employee and predictive scheduling. This challenge may involve an employee's total number of hours and schedule advance notices total hours (Ton, 2014). The majority of the franchise-type and retailers adopt predictive scheduling software in the management of their payroll conservatively. But non-chain restaurants and bars use the conventional scheduling of a pen or computer. However, they fail to realize that overtime could be a challenge. It is illegal for managers to require workers to wait until Saturday to know if they should work at night or not. Addressing this challenge will include giving employees at least 72 hours' notice before starting any schedules. Another issue is hiring and training the most t qualified staff that will make a difference in the daily operation because of the high employee turnover rate in the hotel sector in NYC. Addressing the problem will include placement of greater emphasis on recruiting and training staff, which will ensure the reduction of costs and quality customer service and general experience.
