Local Bricks and Mortar Stores in Jamaica
For the longest time, the local Bricks and Mortar stores businesses had been doing well in Jamaica. But as technology began to grow, customer demands and priorities began to shift (Bunting, 2020). Most Jamaican populations prefer to shop online rather than go to a local Bricks and Mortar store. There are so many online stores to choose from without having to use any effort at all. Local businesses in Jamaica are heavily dependant on their clients; without clients, they cannot operate, and so the local Bricks and Mortar store have to use e-Commerce to help run their business better.
How e-Commerce is Forcing out Local Businesses
The local economy in Jamaica presently suffers losses because of its changes from what was once vibrant. Many business owners are forced to go back to the drawing board to remain profitable as the e-Commerce landscape keeps shifting (Bennet, 2017). Online shopping in Jamaica has not only caused a change in how business is conducted in Jamaica. It has forced business owners to be on toes with the global competition if they do not want to be taken out of business. An example of local companies that e-Commerce has overthrown is the notable shift that occurred after a global recession that took place in 2008, followed by the crash of CashPlus and Olint. E-commerce, a jewelry business, changed into a restaurant.
Businesses are facing technological changes daily. Unlike local companies with limited storage and display space, online companies can display various goods and services. Most consumers argue that buying products online is cost-effective and time-saving, unlike local businesses, which may be tedious and expensive. Online businesses compete on quality and efficiency, which may be hard to compete for local businesses. Online shopping businesses such as Amazon are very popular across the world. It is interesting that most Jamaicans are familiar with Amazon and have used it for shopping, yet they do not know local businesses. Organizations such as the Private Sector Organization of Jamaica advocated for the capitalization of policies to tame the business world's growing trends.
Introducing duty-free shops in Jamaica could go a long way in boosting the sector of local businesses such as the local Brick and Mortar companies. The Jamaican government should also try to work on eliminating the smuggling of products into the country. If the Jamaican government applies duties on import goods, it will help the local business a lot. But when people go shopping online and attempt to get it into the country without paying the import duties, they kill the local businesses.
