Black Friday is among the most revered holidays in the United States but with it brings a fair share of criticism over the manner in which retailers capitalize on the day. This involves long-running adverts which endear to consumers. However, in this critical analysis study, the critique of the mannerisms of the retailers towards advancing their cause forms the basis of criticism from the article by Andrew Leonard, “Black Friday: Consumerism Minus Civilization.” Drawing from research and observation, the article expounds on the shenanigans surrounding the holiday with an emphasis on the consumer behaviors which are driven by retailers as well as the employee exploitation in order to meet the demands and expectations. The art of capitalistic orientation among retailers results to exploitations such as the requisition for employees to report for work at midnight due to a large customer base during the over-sensitized ‘Black Friday’ deals. However, there exist inconsistencies and unfounded conclusions or viewpoints in the article which deviate from the intended purpose such as labeling Crazy Target Lady as a “lunatic”. This is due to the fact that the commercial is intended for marketing purposes and allude to the Target deals during the Black Friday shopping period while upholding an American context.
