Chapter I: Introduction
1.1 Background of the study
Learning and teaching is a trend that keeps changing with time. The L2 (second language) pedagogy is enshrined in the Applied Linguistics field. Its primary focus is on research within the SLA (second language acquisition) and other linguistic disciplines. Some years back, the focus on various aspect of linguistics changed from considering literacy from one’s ability to write and read. Today, the definition of literacy within the SLA perspective refers to the ability of one’s level past linguistic knowledge. It is more than being able to understand the complex concepts regarding the extensive know-how of interaction within a social setting. SLA literacy is beyond the ability to evaluate and interpret various discourses within signs, symbols, and written texts. It spreads to multiple measures of linguistic, grammatical structure and knowledge of lexis, cultural awareness, pragmatic competence, use of technology, and social issues (Wang et al., 2010).
The pedagogy of language since time immemorial has majored on the use of pens and other printed materials. However, there occurred a separation of the teaching culture into two major categories; the "big C" and "little c" meaning, high and popular culture.
