Technological Barriers to Effective Remote Learning
The mission of every community college is to be a center of lifelong learning. Today, most community colleges have advanced their efforts in adopting educational technologies, for instance, the need for a personal computer and blackboard assignments. With technological advancements and development of cost-effective learning devices, colleges are drawn to the increased use of digital media to facilitate and transform classroom instruction. Colleges are inclining more towards technology-dependent teaching and learning resources such as computer simulations, course web pages, the internet, and emails. According to Lederman (2020), technology can enhance traditional face-to-face learning to eliminate the educational limitations imposed by time and space to institute effective and lifelong learning. Through online learning, students and teachers do not have to congregate in the same place at the same time to study. Lederman (2020) states that a college is no longer a physical place with residence halls and classrooms or a collection of ivy-covered buildings but a boundless cyberspace with unlimited learning potential.
However, Lederman (2020) identifies that there has been a sudden and forced adoption of remote instruction following the pandemic, affecting the wellbeing of teachers and students alike. The need for complete or hybrid remote learning during and after the COVID-19 pandemic has transformed instruction, compelling global community college institutions to reimagine how students learn and how to teach. The widespread shift to remote learning means that the future of education is in online platforms due to the growing globalization trends that transcend beyond the pandemic. According to Prokes and Housel (2021), integrating a fitting and effective face-to-face instruction alternative requires a deliberate, innovative, and costly venture. The shift to remote learning has been hard for students and faculty who are not used to being online. Prokes and Housel (2021) establish that finding a balance between work-life and staying connected with students challenges most lecturers. Therefore, effective remote learning will demand more student and instructor flexibility to align online learning modalities with educational objectives to promote academic achievement.
