Abstract
Jean Piaget was born in 1896 in Switzerland. He grew up in Neuchâtel where he developed his interest in science. By the time he was in his teens, his works were published and he was renowned. Jean’s contributions to the field of psychology were greatly attributed to his theory of cognitive development. He claimed that cognitive development occurred through phases; the sensorimotor stage, preoperational stage, concrete operational stage and the formal operational stage. He further developed the stages by giving an age bracket for each of them. After the development of theory, many curriculum developers rethought the curriculum which facilitated education. However, his theory was criticized where some critics claimed that the stages were inaccurate. On the other hand, Lev Vygotsky was born in 1896 in Belarus. His contributed to psychology through his social development theory. He argued that culture played an integral part in the cognitive growth of children.
