Why do Arab People Make Spelling Mistakes
Introduction
Language refers to a reciprocal interaction between two or more people. While there are numerous idioms around the world, they harness the exchange of information between parties, thereby fostering effective communication. The advent of geographical migration in search of education, health services, recreation, and job opportunities have created the need to learn new languages. In the yesteryears, society relied on the native idiom often learned through parents as the first craft. From the formative years, children easily understood, spoke, and wrote their mother tongue as it was a dominant mode of communication both at home and within the community. However, the inception of migratory tendencies necessitated people to learn, understand, and communicate in foreign languages in their respective destinations. Over time, Arabs have migrated into English-spoken nations as they endeavor to attain economic, legal, political, and social empowerment. This migration requires the immigrants to learn the English language, understand it, and communicate using this idiom freely. While most Arabs can speak the dialect freely, they can hardly write in English without making numerous grammatical and spelling mistakes (Tops, Callens, Bijn, and Brysbaert, 2014). Undoubtedly, most Arabic nationals make a myriad of omissions and commission when writing the English language, evidencing the complexity allied with learning a new language. This study will correlate the results of a small-scale study with existing literature to illuminate the challenges novice Arab learners undergo as they attempt to master the English writing system.
