The Evolution of the Cell Phone Name Professor 16th December, The evolution of the cell phone A cell phone is a wireless communication device. Michael Farady aspirated the development of the cell phone when he researched the conduction of electricity in space. Doctor Mahol discovered that people could communicate wirelessly. (King & Andrew, 2010) In 1928, the Chicago police department installed the first radio in its patrol cars which allowed them to send alerts through the regular car radio frequencies. In 1946, AT&T Company made the telephone industry commercial by introducing it to one hundred towns and corridors. The users had to depress a button to listen and release to talk. The subscriber growth was hampered by the three radio stations available and only three subscribers could talk at the same time. (Kavoori & Arceneaux, 2006) In 1965, AT&T introduced more radio stations to increase the number of simultaneous calls per day. They introduced customer care calling and eliminated manual calls by the operator and also reduced the size and weight of the cell phone. In 1962, Motorola Company was founded and introduced the ‘Walkie- talkie' which was a wireless phone, smaller by size and with the concept of people being able to call each other from anywhere, but the cost was too high for many to afford. (King & Andrew, 2010) It took ten years for the Federal Communication Commission to approve the mobile phone. Motorola introduced them formally in 1983 as the first automatic analog cellular phone. The prices had gone down, and the cell phone use had exploded. In the early 1990s, the second generation phone systems were created. The Europeans developed the GSM and the Americans the CDMA. These two were different from the earlier version because they used digital transmission. In 1993, the first smart phone was introduced name IBM Simon. IT worked as a cell phone, fax and pager at the same time. (Rappaport, 1996) The use of the 2G phone became widespread and many people needed to utilize the phone in the daily life, and the need for services such as browsing the internet was growing.
