Depression in The Geriatric Population
Abstract
The current change of events in the lifestyle today has made depression a common phenomenon across various aged brackets. Be it the teenagers, the middle-aged, or the elderly, depression has heightened in a worrying rate, making it necessary to find out the most effective solution, and probably come up with measures that can be put in place to help in mitigating this social challenge. Whereas depression cuts across all ages, this project will address the issue of depression in the aged and elderly population, and most importantly, what cultivates depression in geriatric population, how it can be addressed, measures that can be used to curb the in-depth effect of depression in the elderly population, the intervention plan that can be used to address the same, the implementation plan, and finally, the evaluation of the findings.
In many cases, depression is quickly addressed through a few sessions of counseling, social integration, and in other cases, the provision of a solution to a rooted problem. However, the situation in the elderly is predominantly tedious to address using the same approaches. Depression in the old adults lasts longer, and the long-term effects are most likely death. Depression is a psychological problem that demands more than over-the-counter treatment. Unfortunately, it is, in most cases, under-diagnosed in the elderly, and perceived to be a minor issue that will showcase and disappear with time. Contrary to the societal perception, depression in the elderly lasts longer than usual, and in most cases, it claims many lives than most lifestyle diseases.
In the process of this project, I engaged in thorough research about depression, what factors contribute to increased cases of depression, and how they can be addressed. In particular, the target population for this project is the elderly, with consideration of the life expectancy of 75 years in the united states. The most crucial findings of the project are that the geriatric population is increasing with time, and the lifestyle continuous to demand extra resources, energy, and human input to take care of them. Some of the most effective approaches that proofed to work positively in addressing this social issue are the impact of caregivers for the elderly, provision of primary healthcare needs, and general social support that will keep the elderly persons engaged and feeling part and parcel of the population in which they are living.
