Introduction
Diabetes is one of the deadliest lifestyle diseases in the 21st century that continues to claim many lives across the world. According to the American Diabetes Association (2010), Diabetes is a group of metabolic illness that emerges from defects in insulin secretion whereby the production is either too high or too low. Besides, diabetes also arises if there are defects in insulin action. It is imperative to note that there are different types of diabetes, but they are all associated with the same health effects (Arcangelo et Al., 2017).
Types of diabetes
Three main types of diabetes known across the world are type 1/ juvenile diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestation diabetes (Arcangelo et Al., 2017). Each of these forms of diabetes differs in characteristics such as their causes and treatment.
Type 1 diabetes / Juvenile diabetes
Type 1 diabetes often arises due to an immune deficiency, and it is also known as Juvenile diabetes (Mayoclinic, 2017). As the name states, juvenile diabetes is common among children. The patient struggles with small production of insulin because the beta cells that produce insulin are attacked by the immune system by mistake (Arcangelo et Al., 2017). It is imperative to note that this attack results in permanent damages of the beta cells, and this affect the production of insulin. There is no single know reason as to why a human immune system attacks and destroys the beta cells, but most experts argue that it could be triggered by genetic composition or the environment or both (Jacobson et al., 2013).
