Excessive consumption of alcohol is associated with myriads of psychological and physical effects. A lot of people in the United States of America and other parts of the world are struggling with alcohol dependence, abuse, addiction or alcohol abuse disorders. Abuse of alcohol has both short term and long-term side effects. Sleepiness, skin flushing, mood swings, elevated blood pressure, decreased core body temperature, reduced brain activity, among others are the short-term side effects of using alcohol. Abusing alcohol for a long time leads to chronic and fatal complications or diseases. Liver cirrhosis, pancreatitis, diabetes, dementia, impotence in women are a few diseases that are attributable to abusing alcohol for a long time. Noteworthy, these are general side effects of either binge –consumption of more than drinks per occasion –or excessive use of alcoholic beverages (Blashfield, & Fuller, 2016, p. 416). For women, especially expectant mothers, either binge or heavy drinking can lead to serious health complications to both the mother and the fetus. For an in-depth understanding of the health effects of alcohol on pregnant mothers and their fetus, this paper explores Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) as a disorder of either excessive or binge consumption of alcohol among expectant women.
