Health Information Management (HIM) is the practice tasked to do inquiry, analysis and protection of the digital and traditional medical information that is vital in providing medical quality patient care. HIM is a wide career that offers various disciplines in healthcare services. This allows individuals who have an interest in the healthcare career to make choices on the discipline that suits them. As a health care student, I am going to specialize in compliance/risk management discipline. Risk management is a discipline in the healthcare that comprises of the administrative and clinical systems, reports employed to help in detecting, monitoring, assessing, mitigating and preventing risks (Oachs, & Watters, 2016). The deployment of healthcare risk management came as a result of the transition from traditional healthcare systems to modern healthcare systems. The transition came with a lot of risk in the health information management such as cybersecurity concerns which puts the safety of the patients at jeopardy. Due to such kind of risks, hospitals and healthcare facilities have expanded their risk management programs as a way of promoting patient safety and prevention of legal exposure. Therefore, I am interested in risk management because I am planning to bring a permanent solution to the problems of risk faced by healthcare facilities so that patients’ safety can be guaranteed in the future.
