How Running/Hiking Trails Can Benefit the Obese/Overweight African American Community
Obesity ranks among the serious public health concerns in the United States today. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines overweight and obesity as an excessive or abnormal fat accumulation in the human body that may compromise health (CDC, 2021). Data from the CDC indicates that the prevalence of obesity stood at 42.4% between 2017 and 2018. With a steady increase of these figures through the years, obesity-related conditions such as stroke, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes have become the leading causes of premature death. Besides, obesity in America accounted for an estimated annual medical cost of $147 billion in 2008, with the African American community posting the highest prevalence rate of 49.6 percent (CDC, 2021). Thus, this situation prompts an urgent need for proper sensitization of the Black Americans on current trends such as running and hiking to address the problem.
