Impact of Media on Eating Disorder in Women (23 to 40 years)
Eating disorders is any of the range of psychological disorders that are characterized by unusual or abnormal eating habits such as anorexia nervosa. Rising prevalence of eating disorders in women is one of the most disturbing problems in the contemporary world. Fuelled by the technology and the rising number of social media platforms, eating disorders are on the rise and the issues requires urgent attention. On a closer look, there are numerous adverts and messages showing that thin women are the most admirable and women of al other shapes are worthless. Similarly, companies marketing beauty products also use thin women who are mostly models to market their products, making plus-size women feel the need to cut on their diets and try to achieve the type of bodies adored in the media. This project will focus on assessing the effect of media on eating disorders in women between 23 to 40 years.
Literature Review
Anorexia nervosa is the first of the three types of eating disorders. It includes behaviours such as fasting, dieting, diet pills, laxatives and over-exercising. Women who are exposed to the media and the adverts and images of thin women and how desirable they are often start developing these behaviours (Mancuso, Newton, Bosanac, Rossell, Nesci & Castle, 2015). Bulimia nervosa is the second type of eating disorder that involves frequent episodes of eating large amounts of food which is usually followed by purging. Binge eating disorder is the third type of disorder and involves eating large amounts of food in a short span. It happens twice in one week for about six months.
