As defined by Friese (2015), Magnet Recognition Program refers to a program run by the American Nurses Credentialing Centre (ANCC) with the aim to allow nurses identify nursing excellence in other nurses. ANCC recognizes healthcare institutions that promote quality patient outcomes, nursing excellence, accredits healthcare organizations that deliver and approve ongoing nursing education, offering educational resources to support nurses and healthcare organizations as they work towards excellence as well as safe working environments. Magnet Recognition Program is deemed to be the highest recognition for nursing excellence boasting of ISO 9001:2008 certification.
For a nurse to acquire the prestigious Magnet recognition, ANCC (2017) highlights that one goes through a lengthy, thorough and vigorous participation within a healthcare organization. One is required to participate in the comparison of the healthcare establishment’s current performance with the components of each source of evidence. It is essential to evaluate how the organization has been doing regarding quality patient outcomes, over a specified period. After identification of existing gaps, a nurse is expected to participate in the development of action plans to enhance higher performance levels.
ANCC (2017) further illustrates that to apply for the Magnet Recognition Program; a healthcare organization pays the main application fee of $5000. Once the request is successfully approved, a Senior Program Analyst gets allocated to the healthcare institution. The selected Magnet Program Director may contact the allocated analyst to acquire clarity on documentation requirements and intended standards. An individual nurse is expected to take part in the process of coming up with the organization’s planned standards, giving suggestions and reasons as to why one standard would be better than the other.

The healthcare organization is also required to sustain programs such as quality enhancement, nursing research, shared governance, “evidence-based” practice, peer review and teamwork. Members of nursing workforce should be involved in the use of this infrastructure to promote proficient nursing practice. As an individual nurse, one should be on the forefront to encourage other nurses to boost their professional performance by using the infrastructure provided by the healthcare organization as provided by American Nurses Credentialing Centre.
A nurse aiming for Magnet recognition should be actively involved in the critical examination of the organizational culture, how it has evolved as a result of changes in use of infrastructure as well as ensures integration of infrastructure introduced earlier into the organization. The integration to guarantees that the organization abides by the Magnet Model Service delivery requirements.
