Mental health disparities related to veterans with PTSD
The United States of America has had its military forces operating in different wars in different parts of the world such as Iraq and Afghanistan. Such conflicts have exposed American soldiers to extremely stressing and depressing conditions that have contributed to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among war veterans (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Most war veterans are suffering from PTSD, a condition that has affected them along with their families mentally, emotionally and also financially. One of the significant problems that are associated with this problem is the health disparities that the veterans face. This paper will discuss mental health disparities related to veterans with PTSD. It will describe how cultural, social, political, and diversity factors and environmental conditions impact assessment. Some of the issues that will be considered include poverty, homelessness, immigration, human rights violations, trauma, violence, war, terrorism, natural disasters, and environmental conditions as influencers of the comprehensive assessment of veterans with PTSD. Finally, the paper will provide a synthesis of the understanding of the said population as it relates to a multidimensional assessment from a culturally competent social work perspective.
Current uneven access to proper mental healthcare services by the veterans with PTSD shows that there are severe mental health disparities that should be addressed if the group should receive adequate care. Hester (2017) notes, "the information presented here shows that the shortcomings of our health care system in addressing the mental health needs for our returning veterans may lead to the high suicide rates." The present mental health disparities in the US healthcare system indicate that veterans with PTSD cannot access adequate healthcare services and this reflects a problem that affects the general population in the US. Therefore, addressing inadequacies in the healthcare sector particularly the existing disparities is key to the provision of proper healthcare services for people who need such services.
