Introduction
The various challenges encountered in the nursing profession that have hindered competent health care delivery were the contributing factors to the formation of an intervention. Future of Nursing, an initiative by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and Institute of Medicine (IOM), formulated a report on action plans. Nurses who are among the primary health caregivers have an intricate role in ensuring patients' have equitable access to health services often due to their broad scope of work. They have vital tasks such as accurate administration of medication, monitoring patients' progress, delivering health education, including training patients on preventive health practices, thus contributing to infection prevention amongst other roles. The report consisted of the completion of four key messages aimed at improving health care delivery (Future of Nursing, 2014). The Institute of Medicine described critical skills for healthcare professionals as another intervention aimed at enhancing the quality of care. This paper focuses on some challenges faced by nurses in care delivery, solutions to the problems, key competencies of the Institute of Medicine, and their relationship to nursing practice.
