Pharmacodynamics (PD) refers to how the body biologically responds to drugs. Pharmacokinetics (PK) refers to the movement of drugs in the body and describes how a patient is exposed to drugs through distribution, absorption, metabolism, excretion, and bioavailability. A patient’s age affects the two processes in various ways. According to the case study, Patient CB suffers from stroke, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia; diseases that people suffer at an older age (Venitz, 2019). Seemingly, his absorption of the orally offered drugs can be delayed or impaired. Individuals with increased age face decreased volume of distribution and making drugs start accumulating in fat stores. One faces reduced renal activities and this leads to difficulty clearing of drugs in the kidney after they are metabolized in the liver. It follows that elderly patients are more sensitive to the effects of pharmacodynamics. In the case of CB, the offered drugs may have adverse effects. Therefore, nurses handling the patient should train him appropriately to ensure he uses the drugs as recommended.
