A civil war encompasses an armed conflict between a non-state group or organization and the government that seeks to take the control of the government or taking the power in a particular region or changing the policies of the government in power through violence. Currently, there are quite some civil conflicts in the world. An example of a current civil conflict is the Syrian crisis. It began as an Arab Spring uprising against dictatorial leadership and has mushroomed into a ruthless substitute war that has had the effect of drawing regional as well as international community. The four and half years of the armed conflict in Syria started as pro-democracy protests that were against the government in March 2011 after the apprehension and torture of teenagers and the security forces shot and killed some protesters. It subsequently developed into full-scale civil war demanding the resignation of the president as well as defending themselves against government forces.
The conflict is about the political supremacy of the conflicting groups. The participants of the civil war include the loyalist forces to their current President Bashar al-Assad on one front ad on the other those who are against his rule as well as some jihadist militants who are from the Islamic State. A resolution by the UN Security Council in 2014required all the groups to stop their extensive use of weapons in areas where there are high populations. Islamists and jihadists currently have outnumbered the moderates and are using ruthless strategies in the fighting. The US in 2014 September led airstrikes aiming to eliminate the Islamic State. There have been efforts by the Arab League as well as the United Nations to call for cease-fire and initiate dialogue but have not been fruitful. The Syrian crisis is a civil war as it involves armed conflict where there is an effective resistance between the two sides that are armed. It is an example of an Arab Uprising that is undergoing sustained civil disorder as well as governmental changes. Syria has had public demonstrations as well as unrestrained violence on those protesting resulting to the militarization of the opposition leading to the loss of lives of many people. There has been intervention from the US as well as Russia in the crisis where they claim to fight the terrorists in Syria.
