The present Mesopotamia is located in present day Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iran, Turkey and parts of Egypt. The region is often referred to as the Middle East, thus an indication that Mesopotamia means a land between two rivers as it was located between the Euphrates and Tigris River. On matters related to culture, they developed a number of festivals, ceremonies, traditions and other cultural related activities. For instance, most of the rituals and ceremonies in Mesopotamia were based rites of passage that took place during birth and marriages (Adams, 2017).The aforementioned celebrations were accompanied with music, dancing and food. Children were raised based on their gender roles. An example is where boys raised to be have learning skills that would be used to work and girls were associated with motherly and wifely traits.
Most Mesopotamia individuals were farmers and there were also carters, brick makers, fishermen, soldiers and leather employees. Mesopotamia further consisted of stone carvers, weavers, tradesmen and potters. The life of Mesopotamians also consisted of nobles who were involved in administration. Significantly, the daily life in ancient Mesopotamia depended on an individual’s status and occupation. Thousands of years ago, Mesopotamia’s weather was semi-arid, with hot summers and sporadic rain. Fortunately, the presence of river Tigris and Euphrates made the region humid, fertile and ideal for nomads to start settlements. Huge amounts of water and nutrient-rich soil made it ideal for agriculture (Postgate, 2017). Therefore, the availability of indigenous crops like wheat, dates, and barley permitted Mesopotamia people to effectively take part in farming/agriculture. The invention of the ox drawn ploughs and seed drills and increased demand for food due to increased population was another factor that led to the presence of farming in Mesopotamia
