Long before the invention of computers, we are tempted to think that our ancestors must have faced a pretty hard time carrying out their daily activities. In the current age we live in, coupled with the internet and almost everyone owning a technology gadget, it is highly unlikely that one would do without these. Perhaps one of the greatest inventions of all time is the virtual simulation that has been used in different industries to make various processes a little easier. Let us simplify things here. Simulation is a system that models real-life events into short episodes, to be used in studying complex systems that would otherwise be difficult in real-life situations. Consequently, processes that would be dangerous in real life can now be easily modeled and studied while the risk is significantly reduced.
Discrete Event Simulation (DES) is the process that models the behavior as well as the performance of a facility, system or real-life process. Currently, DES is majorly used in the healthcare industry to help surgeons and doctors enhance their studies in a risk-free environment. With the increasing speed and memory of computers, simulation can now be used to solve a good number of problems experienced in the world. It has also been rendered cost-effective in that it accounts for resources. For instance, in the simulation of a baby being nursed in the Intensive Care Unit, the cots and the appropriate nursing staff are not necessarily needed in the training. Needless to say, simulation has allowed many situations to be tested and proven. This gives decision-makers an easy time to discover alternative ways of implementing policies.
