The purpose of this paper is to research about evolution and trends of information system infrastructure. The information system infrastructure has advanced from the mainframe era to the client-server era and distributed component era. Its rapid growth can be credited to the development of IS architecture expertise over years. During the mainframe era, the information system architecture depended on integrated computing and processing of data using proprietary software and hardware technology. The original computer networks depended on architecture of file sharing where the server downloaded. Client server era was vital because during this era the client app used was a proprietary interface and non-standard. In order to operate the software, the users have to be specially trained. To upgrade the server side app, needs upgrading client software also. Based on the quantity of software running on the client, clients may be fat or thin. However, there are factors that affect the right client weight. The factors include the cost, the degree of security required as well as the reliability and speed of the network. Since much of the software is accommodated on the server, thin clients need less remote sustenance to maintain software. A fat client is required when the network is slow since less data is moved through every transaction. The influence of unreliable networks may be reduced by having the client software offer the access and catching data on the remote machine.
