Why Create Ethical Awareness in Children?
Introduction
Childhood is one crucial experience that may greatly predict whether an adult grows up to be respectable, or oppositely miserable. It is for this reason that early childhood education was developed to address the issue at hand. Much as there is never a building without foundation, teaching children fundamental skills from an early age will serve them later in life. Perhaps, teachers committed to developing such skills should be rewarded greatly, as they help determine the shape of the society at large. While explaining to a child the importance of gratitude or honesty may be quite difficult, children should be shown how much good behavior can have a great effect on others. One great opportunity to take advantage of is the fact that children are curious, which ultimately means that they learn a lot faster. As a rule of thumb, creating ethical awareness is important in helping a child transition from just a naïve child into a responsible adult.
While every teacher and parent want their children to learn how to be caring and be considerate, it could be a little bit overwhelming for the child, or rather confusing. For this reason, it is advised to put morals in their order of priority, then teach one at a time. (Ireland, 2018) This will guarantee that children have an easier time understanding the benefits of each ethical standard. The whole idea of training young children's ethics is to help them develop their sense of self-direction. This, unlike any other skill, will help them know their identity. If one does not know his identity, he will let others define him, which in itself is not ethically correct. On the balance, gaining a sense of direction will give children the great ability to determine what is right or wrong from an early age.
