Employee Monitoring – The Impact of IT
The issue of employee monitoring and information technology (IT) control is now very broad, very current, very sensitive, very popular and yet very controversial. Flynn and Flynn (2005) sees the key trouble spot on the privacy horizon as being new IT tools, specifically tools of surveillance such as video monitoring, using global positioning systems (GPS), tracking employees with radio frequency identification, using key loggers, utilizing human resource information systems, utilizing electronic performance monitoring, monitoring data inflow/outflow of company cellular phones, monitoring telephone calls, monitoring Internet usage, and monitoring computer activity, including emails—personal as well as business-related (Smith et al., 2009). This research paper raises the question that, given the sophisticated tools of clandestine surveillance in place, does an employee have a fundamental right to privacy, or has it already been expunged?
