Employment Selection Procedures
These are systematic steps followed by a company when filling a vacancy. It can be defined as the process of choosing the right human resource for a specific job (Golec, & Kahya, 2007). Different companies have different procedures for employee selection, but all tend to follow a general procedure:
* Analysis
* Advertisement
* Application
* Written test
* Interview
* Medical examination
* Initial job offer
* Acceptance or rejection letter
* Appointment
* Induction.
Job Analysis
The section with the vacancy requests the Human Resource Department for additional staff. The HR team is tasked with preparing a job description and the job specifications for the currently vacant position. This gives the details of the vacancy i.e. the job title, the job description, the specific job requirements and the conditions of the job (contractual or permanent and pensionable)
Advertisement
Guided by the job analysis, HR chooses the medium with which to communicate the vacancy. This can be the company’s website (internal advertisement) or the leading newspapers with details of how to apply for the job.
Application
Those interested in the job are then expected to let the company know of their interests by applying for the same as stated in the advertisement within the specified time frame.
Written tests
The shortlisted candidates are then subjected to a written test, which the HR uses to screen the applicants further.
