The Interrelationships among Sociability, Social Confidence, Self-Esteem, and Facebook Use for College Students (Research Paper Sample)

Instructions:

this research study is one of my proudest accomplishments from my academic career. I completed the entire study almost entirely on my own. one of my professors helped me with certain really challenging statistical analysis problems.
There was no task that produced this sample. I was involved with independent research at clemson university for three years. at the beginning of my third year, the professor that i worked with the most told me that i would be working on something new that year and that I would be doing it on my own.
After a few days I realized that she meant i had to come up with a topic to research, plan an experiment / study, then analyze, report, and present the findings.
There was not a huge amount of research related to facebook specifically when i conducted this study. I have always been fascinated by the effects of social media on mental health. at the time of this research, i was a much more optimistic person and thought that facebook and social media could be used to improve self-esteem. my opinion has completely changed regarding social media, but completing this project was still one of the most rewarding things i've ever accomplished.

The Interrelationships among Sociability, Social Confidence, Self-Esteem, and Facebook Use for College Students
Benjamin Seth Myers
Clemson University
Abstract
Two groups of 21 participants each completed a self-report measure of sociability and social confidence. Participants then completed a 30-minute Internet activity associated with either Facebook.com or Washington.edu. After the activity, participants completed a self-report measure of self-esteem. Participants in the Facebook condition who indicated high levels of sociability and social confidence demonstrated higher levels of self-esteem than their peers in the Washington condition. As a whole, participants in the Facebook condition indicated higher levels of self-esteem than participants in the Washington condition. Participants in the Facebook condition who indicated low levels of sociability and social confidence did not demonstrate significantly higher levels of self-esteem than their counterparts in the Washington condition. These results partially support previous research on the associations between self-esteem, sociability, and social confidence.
