Hurricane Katrina is one of the most devastating natural in United Sates’ recent history. It was a category 5 tropical storm that caused loss of life, damage to property and displacement of thousands of victims. It even surpassed the 1992 Hurricane Andrew. More than 1,833 people lost their lives in the Katrina hurricane, hundreds of thousands sustained serious injuries and more than 108 billion dollars worth of property was destroyed (Fussell, 2018). The storm mostly affected the Gulf Coast areas of the United States. Low-income citizens of cities such as New Orleans were the most affected since the disaster cut them off from their community and social networks. Apart from the loss of life, physical injuries and damage to property, the most under looked impact hurricane Katrina are psychological impacts suffered by victims. The 9/11 attack on the twin towers is also another devastating disaster that left thousands of survivors and families with major mental and psychological disorders. This essay seeks to assess the main issue sans elements of the Hurricane Katrina and the 9/11 attack. The mental and psychological impacts suffered by the victims of the two catastrophes will be assessed and an examination of at least three resources that of helping the victims of the two disasters.
