Definition
Auditory processing disorder (APD) is a hearing dysfunction which affects both children and adults. It is estimated that 5% children of the school-going age are affected by APD. Hind et al. (2008 in Moore et al., 2010). APD is also known as central auditory processing disorder (CAPD). Padilla et al. (2016) described APD as a disorder that causes children to have difficulty comprehending speech in challenging environments, despite their peripheral hearing being normal. Children with APD do not experience difficulty with understanding speech in quiet environments (Padilla et al., 2016). Unlike what common misconceptions have held, APD is not in any way connected to deafness.
Auditory processing is a role of the brain, which processes audible information. Essentially then, it is the brain that hears and not the ears. The ears play the role of sending raw information to the brain for analysis. The brain's interpretation of the information depends on its auditory processing skills. The inability of the brain to properly process information is what is termed as APD. In a broad sense, APD refers to the way the central nervous system (CNS) utilizes auditory information. However, the CNS is enormous and therefore responsible for many functions. These include memory, language and attention. For this reason, therefore, to differentiate APD from other disorders that affect people's ability to pay attention, understand, and remember.
