Abstract
The paper highlights the timeline of events relating to the interactions between the native American tribes and the federal government. Initially, native tribes were pushed out of their lands by white Americans, and many were killed in the process. In response to this, the federal government developed legislation to safeguard the interests of these tribes. Tribes that received federal recognition attained certain benefits such as being sovereign, having their lands placed in a trust, and receiving grants from the federal government. However, there are numerous challenges involved in the process of gaining recognition, and these include the length of the entire process and the opposition by various states which are determined to revoke such recognition.
Introduction
Native American tribes occupied various parts of the US, but over time they were pushed away from their lands. The result was the creation of reservation lands that were considered to be independently owned by the native tribes. However, while the federal government considers native tribes to be sovereign entities, there have been various legislations that have been developed that highlight the relationship that exists between these tribes and the federal government. Some of these legislations include the Dawes Act of 1887, the Citizenship Act of 1924, the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934, and the Relocation Policy of 1948. Similarly, various bodies have been created to check the affairs of native tribes, such as the creation of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The paper, therefore, highlights the issues relating to Native American tribes and their recognition by the federal government.
