Effects of Bullying on the Emotional, Social, and Psychological Well-being of Adolescents
Adolescent bullies use words to domineer, intimidate, or manipulate others to maintain power and control over them. They insult, humiliate, scare, isolate, or ridicule their victims based on physical appearance, race, sexuality, abilities and color among other features. The victims feel disappointed, depressed, and helpless, sometimes to the point of attempting suicide. They develop low self-esteem, avoid people, and become angry at everyone. The bullies and those who witness the acts also suffer various emotional and psychological consequences. While the former risk becoming intensely antisocial, the latter also encounter increased trends of disappointment, shame, and regrets, among other challenges. Overall, mental and verbal bullying has diverse social, emotional, and psychological effects on the well-being of victims, bullies, and bystanders.
The social and mental effects of bullying are most adverse to the victims. Many become distrusting and find it challenging to make friends and maintain healthy social relationships. According to Smokowski and Evans (2019), they develop low self-esteem, associating themselves with failure, helplessness, and incompetence. Resultantly, most of them isolate themselves, avoid school, and shy away from activities they previously loved. In the long-term, these effects can turn into chronic depression, anxiety disorders, and poor general health trends. Bullying victims can have increased risks of suicidal thoughts
