The Truth of Prison Privatization.
National authorities have traditionally contracted out particular services to private companies, such as healthcare, food preparation, skills courses, and prisoner transportation. Participation of the private sector in prisons is nothing new. The 1980s, on the other hand, marked the beginning of a new period in which prisons were privatized. Prison congestion and growing expenses became more troublesome for municipal, provincial, and government agencies due to the "war on drugs" and exponential increase of imprisonment. Due to the expanding legal system, private business interests have increased their involvement in prisons, moving from merely subcontracting  services to contracting for the management and supervision of whole penitentiaries. For-profit jail corporations build and operate new jails, which is part of the monetization of incarceration now underway. Private firms are taking over state facilities. After then, the local, state, or federal government will be billed a daily or per month, depending on the area for each detainee.
Only when Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) was awarded the management contract for an American prison in 1984,that the contemporary prison industrial complex made its public debut. No other government had ever leased out a prison's entire operation to an outside company before. (Mattera, et al 2001.) When CCA made its attempt to take over Tennessee's whole state jail system for $200 million in 2008, the nation took notice. Because of stiff resistance from government workers and distrust from the state legislature, the plan was scuttled. (Low, 2003). However, CCA has subsequently grown effectively, as have other profit-making prison businesses, despite its original failure.
