Realism on Brexit
The decision by Britain to leave the European Union (EU) can be interpreted in different ways. Realism and constructivism are some of the approaches that political analysts use to analyze the historic event. According to realism theory, states are the leading players in international politics, with each country trying to protect its interests (Hadas, 2016). A realist perspective implies that Britain cannot rely on the European Union to enhance its wellbeing. By exiting the EU, Britain opted to protect its interests by taking control of its immigration and trade policies. Realists argue that each state works hard to be successful, even if prospering comes at the expense of other countries. Therefore, a nation’s presence in an international institution should be determined by the benefits it gets from that organization. Britain was not receiving the desired benefits by being in the EU. Instead, as many Brexit campaigners stated, the country’s presence in the Union was disadvantageous to its people. Hence, withdrawing is the best decision for Britain. However, the process has to be conducted in such a manner that it improves trade and immigration policies, thereby maximizing benefits to the British people.
