Mary Richmond achieved great strides as a pioneering social work professional. Moreover, her contribution to the development of social work as a profession was significant. Raised within a Quaker family emphasizing social activism and serving the community, Richmond was born in Belleville, Illinois, in 1861 (Richmond, Mary, 2011). Her dad was a prospering entrepreneur, and her mom was actively engaged in charity groups. The foundation for her future work in social work was established by Richmond's early exposure to Quaker values and social justice issues.
Richmond attended the Lewis Institute in Chicago after finishing high school, studying chemistry, physics, and other sciences. Despite everything, her heart was drawn towards social work, and thus she began doing voluntary service for the Chicago Bureau of Charities – a public institution offering help to those in need.
