My Ethical Approach Name Institution Class Date My Ethical Approach Ethics is the practice and discipline of applying value to human character and the concepts of culture, especially laws, customs, and morality-causing meaningfulness. From the initial times of historical human awareness, the discipline of ethics has demonstrated fundamental approaches often known as ethical decision-making constructs. Among these approaches are utilitarian ethics based on outcome and deontological ethics based on duty. Utilitarianism is a popular approach to ethics and focuses on outcomes of a person's actions. According to Bentham, making the best decisions involves considering several elements to determine an ideal result (Bentham, 2017, p1789). These aspects comprise factors like scope (the number of individuals an action will impact). Scope asserts whether the pleasure acquired leads to ideal long-lasting impacts and if the acquired pleasure will reproduce more pleasure overall. Fundamentally, Bentham believes that every pleasure is even a democratic feel. Therefore, whatever makes a person happy or brings pleasure differs from one person to another. Deontological ethics implies that duty is the foundation of morality. This approach asserts that morality and freedom are strongly connected. The human capacity that indicates freedom is the ability to think and be independent-this implies that people can offer themselves moral principles. This capability enables people to have ethical responsibility. If people are not able to act freely, they are not to be held responsible for their actions (mill, 2017, p36). Hence, this approach asserts that it is through people's ability for autonomy and reason that they serve as ethical agents. Such abilities make each person irreplaceable and unique. The system that I will use in my life to guide my ethics is the virtue-based ethical reasoning system. As a person employing virtue-based moral reasoning, I must observe the code of ethics or rules for my surroundings, whether at work or in a public setting. I might also need to consider the benefits and the costs of my actions and make decisions in keeping with my conscience of acting and behaving with integrity. In doing so, I will want to act on what is right in light of situations that can consider the ethical knowledge of my religious faith. An example of applying this system can happen since I am a philanthropist. I volunteer my time for people in need, and I try to offer as much as possible. I have a compassion virtue. I am an educator at work, and my compassion is also relevant there. I assist my fellow educators regularly, and I go out of my way to ensure that the school programs are well covered by the end of the day. As an employee with a collection of ethics and virtues, I apply them daily at work and in other social settings. A solid set of virtues is essential because these actions are transferred in the working environment. Virtue ethics is an exceptional system at work since it does not concentrate only on work activities but also holds that if one is a good person, one will be an excellent employee. Another example would be if, as an educator in my institution, I have to manage an issue of bullying whereby a weak student is being bullied. The more vulnerable student is frightened of coming to school, filling the parents with concerns. Meanwhile, the bully student is a child of a renowned family in society who contributes to the institution and does not acknowledge the issue. In this case, if I apply a virtue-based approach, I will take action to find a resolution that resolves the connections between both parties based on their beliefs on what is right regarding the matter. For example, I can draw a solution from my faith that advocates forgiveness and understanding to bring all parties together and discuss the issue. The conversation might involve the students and their parents, and I would establish a safe space for everyone to be free to get and share. I would then discuss the significance of forgiveness and how I would love to encourage understanding for the students to have a good relationship with the aid of their parents. The virtue-based approach has its strengths and weaknesses. The strength of employing this approach is that it enables individuals to maintain interpersonal and personal relations, which are essential for refined living. This approach also aids in bringing out the prevailing matters and bringing the concerned individuals closer. The system establishes a sense of unity whereby everybody may work together to resolve issues, like when a moderator unites conflicting parties and enables them to solve the issue instead of taking sides or imposing a resolution.
