Poland, Parliamentary Elections, 13 October 2019
The Election Overview
The Parliamentary Elections in Poland took place on 13 October 2019. The election saw all 460 Members of Parliament (Sejm), and 100 Senate members (Senat) being elected (ODIHR, 2020). The date for the election was chosen by the current president of Poland, Andrzej Duda. The voter turnout was the highest in Poland’s history, since the first ever election held after the monumental end of communism in 1989 (Markowski, 2020). Previous Parliamentary Election took place on 12 November 2015, and according to the Constitution of Poland, the date for the next election must take place within the last 30 days of the 4-year period.
Poland is ruled under multi-party political system, and election type used was the proportional system. Proportional system is when each political party wins a number of seats in the Parliament, which is proportionate to the number of total votes they won during the election (Cox et al, 2019). For instance, if one party wins 20% of the total votes, they win 20% of seats in the Parliament.
