Joe Schmitt’s TEDx talk on "Servant Leadership," demonstrates the virtues of what it means to be a great leader. Joe is a retired Marine officer who believes in putting other people first and inspiring these people to do things that they would not do unless they are put up to the task. Schmitt describes his view on servant leadership by narrating a personal story of his young son, who was diagnosed with a life-threatening disease (Schmitt, 2014). He also describes his commander's reaction when he tells him about his son's condition to demonstrate this virtue of servant leadership. Schmitt's commander delayed his flight to a unified movement for a training exercise so that he would take care of him, "when he sat and sat me down, he said, ‘hey this morning I told you this morning I was going to take care of you (Schmitt,2014)." Schmitt's commander also used his influence to leverage his professional network to get a highly qualified doctor to help Joe and his family.
