Narcissism is a condition where an individual positions themselves as always being right regardless of the reality. The American psychological Association defines narcissistic personality disorder as a pattern of deviant behaviour which the subject person does not attempt to change in spite of the emotional distress it causes in the people who interact with the subject. The interactions run from formal relationships such as at work to informal relations such as parent child relationships even to intimate personal relationships. Narcissists are abusive and will often mistreat those in contact with them usually leaving emotional and at times physical scars on their victims.[Psychology Today . Narcissistic Personality Disorder. 02 Feb 2015. /conditions/narcissistic-personality-disorder (accessed May 15, 2015).]
Exposure to such narcissistic parenting in early years of childhood is especially proactive as it configures the child to develop into an indecisive, doubtful person who is low in self confidence. Due to its affects on productivity of people in the vicinity of the narcissist both in short and long term, it is important that the condition is identified and treated. As with all health cases the proper diagnosis is the foundation of successfully addressing the disorder. Below I will discuss the essential features of this personality disorder.
Narcissists exude a sense of self-importance and expect to be accorded the superior status without matching achievements. The first formal documentation of this sense of fantasy, grandiosity, was in the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders in 1980. Since then the ideas of Sigmund Freud on narcissists, have been investigated further revealing finer details of how this personality disorder affects ones relationships. It has been found out that the pattern is conditioned into them as they develop rather than being due to an external causative agent as is normal to mental disorders such as abuse of drugs, head injury or illness.[American Psychiatric Association. : . Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders DSM-IV-TR. Princeton, N.J.: Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic, 2008.] []
Bottom line is that grandiosity will impair the individuals life; but by how much? From the experience of a psychotherapist Joanna Ashmun the impairment can be mild, moderate or severe. At the mild level the disorder only causes minor problem but one holds together quite well. In the moderate impairment personal relationships take a hit as the person avoids contact with workmates and friends and starts skipping responsibilities such as bread winning. In the severe stage one alienates themselves completely form all responsibility or contact with family & friends. At this stage there is a significant risk of personal injury hence need for therapy.[Ashmun, Joanna. "Personality disorders." Narcissistic Personality Disorder. 12 March 2004. /jmashmun/npd/dsm-iv.html (accessed May 14, 2015).]
Online dictionaries use the word "erotic" in defining a patient of this disorder. This intimacy can be associated to the desire to pamper oneself and the excessive self admiration a narcissist accords themselves. In our world today, we are surrounded with narcissists from leaders to celebrities. These two groups are significant because they are often obsessed with the need for: success, power, beauty and being worshipped an indicator of narcissism. They are also the focal point of most of the news for instance Burundian incumbent president, Pierre Nkurusinza’ refusal to step down has been hot news on most channels this week.[Houghton Mifflin Company, . "The American Heritage® New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy Third Edition. ." narcissism. Dictionary.com. 2005. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/narcissism (accessed May 15, 2015).] [BBC News Africa. Burundi coup bid: President says he is back in country. 14 May 2015. /news/world-africa-32732793 (accessed May 15, 2015).]
In music, tunes beaming with fascination with women’s curvy behinds or will hit your ears within an hour of tuning in. Advancement of this wave of Eroticism has been helped on by lack of empathy, another feature of NPD. Narcissists will often arrogantly exploit others to benefits thus making a narcissist parent very dangerous to the child as it continues to grow. When combined with other emotional disorders such as anger and perversion the risk of injury to the young one is significantly increased.
In conclusion NPD is a state of mind where one is reluctant to consider the position or needs of others. The condition manifests itself by an excessively arrogant, puffed-up, contemptuous behaviours and attitudes. The individual will subject those under him to unfair criticism thus hurting the chance or a resolution to the existing problem. This difficult to deal with attitude is the most destructive aspect of those relating with narcissists since they have to adapt to the individual. While these features are common to most personality disorders gratification is unique to NDP and should be used to distinguish it for early treatment. NPD is preventable so take a step to protect your neighbours from exposure to narcissism. Prevention is always better than cure.
