Abstract
The subject on the caffeine effects on cardiovascular health remains controversial. This is because the caffeine influence in habitual caffeine consumers on HRV has been barely investigated. Studies show that coffee increases nerve activities in non-disabled persons. Such activities of nervous system modulations are tracked by investigating the effects on the HRV. A study aims to investigate the caffeine influence on frequency and time domains of heart variability parameters, tidal volume and blood pressure in tetraplegia and paraplegic compared non-disabled individuals. HRV is tested in sitting position and supine, post and pre-ingestion placebo in non-disabled persons. The caffeine effects to the nervous system appear to rely on the impairment extent and lesion levels.
The Effects of Caffeine on the Heart Rate Variability
Over the globe, coffee is a known beverage that has stimulating effects and organoleptic characteristics. The chronic and acute influence of caffeine and coffee to the vascular system has been a controversial subject in research carried over the years. Some studies explain that ingestion of caffeine beverages kindles the activities of the autonomous nervous system. The heart rate, blood pressure and the factors that influence cardiovascular activity have been investigated. Current findings show the caffeine consumption effects on heart rate variability. Therefore, this paper summarizes the caffeine effects on HRV.
Coffee and caffeine have effects on heart rate variability. Among the acute effects, it can be outlined that there is a likelihood of high blood pressure and nervous sympathetic system activation that leads to an increase in circulating catecholamine due to intake of caffeine (Flueck et al., 2016). Also, chronic coffee consumption is related to increased vascular risks. Ideally, it is identified that caffeine intake lose its relations with the reduction of vagal control of the HRV (De Oliveira et al., 2017 pp.741). Caffeine being a respiratory stimulant increases tidal volume and consequently affects HRV (McIntosh et al. 2017 pp. 25). Therefore, intake of caffeine and coffee is said to have heart rate variability in human beings.
This paper reveals an association that exists between coffee consumption and heart rate variability. Notably, the LF/HF appears to decrease after the intake of caffeine. Also, diastolic and systolic blood pressure and the tidal volume increases following the intake of caffeine and this result in a significant decline in heart rat
