Introduction
One’s emotions can ruin any situation if not monitored or controlled. Various cases of emotional behaviors in many organizations continue to rise. Also, some individuals experience problems with their emotions, and they may result in hurting others by either their actions or words. Emotional intelligence and management are two aspects that can help solve the challenges associated with emotions in the current workplaces. First, emotional intelligence offers one the capacity to control, be aware of, and express emotions in ways that favor other people. Also, emotional management helps one to be acceptable to various feelings and have the ability to modulate them. Since corporations form a great part of one’s life, both emotional intelligence and emotional management can do a lot in reducing the challenges that face them in regard to emotional people at the workplace.
Relevance of Emotional Intelligence and Emotional Management in the Workplace Today
Emotional Intelligence
Part one
Emotional intelligence existed in the 90s within scholars, but business leaders embraced the concept and modified it in a way that it would yield better outcomes. With regard to the emotional intelligence factors such as personal qualities such as skills, perseverance, and self-control can significantly influence an individual’s success. A majority of employers spend their resources and time to search for workers who possess high emotional intelligence (EQ) due to various reasons (Schulze, 2005, 129). First, most of the current businesses try to endeavor more into teamwork. Organizations have realized that when people work together, they often yield better results than when working as individuals. Nevertheless, for one to be able to work efficiently in a team, one must have control over one’s emotions (Ashkanasy et al., 2012, 97). Emotional intelligence ensures that all team members direct their efforts toward achieving the best by being aware of and controlling their emotions.
Also, workers who possess high emotional intelligence (EQ) can adjust freely to changes, and they are flexible to each situation. In some cases, business environment cannot be conducive to the workers, which makes them feels unease (Mayor, Salovey, & Caruso, 2012, 205). Employees with less EQ will not comfortably adjust to such business scenarios. Their emotions may lead them to make choices that would risk the company and oneself if the changes do not seem pleasant (Mayor, Salovey, & Caruso, 2012, 199). It is the same reasons as to why many entities spend their time in ensuring that all employees acquire high emotional intelligence. Unfortunately, it is hard to tell when and if the organization will experience drastic changes that might interfere with the employee's state of mind.
Part two
High emotional intelligence assures employees’ trustworthy and competence at work and results in one upholding the virtue of self-awareness. If a person possesses self-awareness, it becomes easy for one to understand one’s strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, such people are flexible and can quickly adjust to different situations that they might face (Mayor, Salovey, & Caruso, 2012, 211). Also, high EQ enables employees to own self-regulation that allows them to express their emotions with control and restraint.
Emotional Management
Part one
Meanwhile, both personal and work life differs significantly regarding how individuals should behave in case of challenging situations. Emotional management is an aspect that every employee needs to have. Responding to situations in work the same way one does in personal life can reduce one’s reputation and business (Ashkanasy et al., 2012, 109). Meanwhile, as long as one continues to operate in the workplace, he/she has to experience stressful situations such as departmental changes, budget cuts, and staff layoffs among other issues (Ashkanasy et al., 2012, 127). In such circumstances, some people might find it hard to manage their emotions; therefore, management of emotions is important in the work environment because it helps one to deal comfortably with any uncertainty within the workplace.
