Health Promotion On Alcohol Use Among Young Adults
Background to the problem
Young adults are at a greater risk for developing alcohol use disorders than other age groups. The long-term health effects of alcohol are well-documented. Still, many people do not realize that excessive alcohol use in young adulthood can have a variety of negative consequences, too. In the United States, underage drinking remains a major public health concern. There is a need for health promotion among young adults to guide them through the use and effects of alcohol. The negative consequences of underage drinking are well known, but the potential benefits of alcohol use for young people are less well understood (Alhabash et al. 2015). Alcohol use is a common risk factor for many health problems, including impaired judgment, violence, and car crashes. Unfortunately, many young people engage in alcohol use without considering the possible long-term consequences. One of the most important social issues facing many young adult is the prevention of alcohol misuse and related harm among young people (Dager et al. 2013). As the prevalence of alcohol use has increased among young people, so too has the health and social cost of alcohol misuse.
The earlier a person starts to drink alcohol, the more likely that person is to become an alcoholic. This calls for the need to address the issue. Young adults today use alcohol in ways their parents and grandparents never imagined. The use of alcohol by this age group has been rising for decades. In 1960, just 18% of young adults drank alcohol. Today, that number is 35%. The rising cost of alcohol and the tendency of bars and restaurants to close at night means too many young people are drinking too much (Gilman et al. 2012). Heavy drinking is linked to a number of serious problems, including car accidents, fights, and sexual promiscuity. It also causes memory problems, which can make it harder for young people to learn and earn money. It is important that young people understand the risks and harms of alcohol abuse so that they can make informed decisions about their drinking.
Rationale and Critical Reflexivity
What did you do?
As a way to reduce the intake of alcohol among young adults, I used both digital media and mass media campaigns. The approaches can be widely used to promote health-enhancing behaviors as well as educating young adults on the dangers of alcohol consumption. It would involve printing educational leaflets on health risks and prevention of alcohol use and advertising them so that the youths would be learned. It is evident that well-developed and effectively campaign programs, which incorporate mass media and digital media, could prevent alcohol intake among the young adults.
Why did you do it?
Using digital media and mass media campaigns would be an effective health promotion in making significant changes in the intake of alcohol and the related problems. It would help those already taking the alcohol and those who are thinking about trying it. The approach was used for its significant advantages. Both digital media and mass media campaigns played a significant role in raising awareness on alcohol uses among the young adults. Most of the young adult use the digital media
