Context
The sculpture is the center image of the AT&T Plaza located at Millennium Park in the Loop community area of Illinois, Chicago. The sculpture’s exact location is on top of the Park Grill in between McCormick Tribune Plaza & Ice Rink and the Chase Promenade. The sculpture was created due to a design competition brought about in the year 1999 when officials of the millennium park including collectors, architects and curators asked for two proposals after reviewing some artistic works. The construction of Millennium Park was intended to be a celebration of the second millennium 2000 and the construction of the sculpture was to complete the intention of showcasing postmodern architecture which was part of the objectives of the park construction.
Concept
Cloud Gate is one of the magnificent sculptures by the artist Anish Kapoor of the Indian origin. The planning of the project began in 1997 during the planning of the construction of the millennium park part that was to include the works of public art. A committee made of a representative from the Art Institute of Chicago, museum of contemplory art and some patrons from the city was tasked with the duty to choose the artists to deal with the public arts installation. Anish Kapoor and Jeff Koons and commissioned for works in separate parts of the park.
