Education Inequalities and Equalities in America
In the United States, education has been a significant challenge considering its high population, which creates a gap in how services are rendered. The country has implemented various strategies to curb ethnic and racial outcomes in the education system. However, significant disparities issues keep rising in the plan to minimize the inequalities in the provision of education. The main controversy in the United States is that the majority of black and Hispanic children access limited educational opportunities compared to white children. According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), there is substantive data that demonstrates the historical inequalities and equality in the American educational system. The educational opportunities are mainly determined by the opportunities offered by an institution, the students, background, and the choices made by the students. The paper provides an analysis of why students need to access equal education opportunities and what they could miss out on if they do not access specific opportunities. Further, it evaluates the American education system and how the government does not consider the section among its priorities.
Importance of equality in the education system
Education is one of the critical elements in enhancing a nation's success in various aspects. Education impacts the life chances that will be available in the person's future success in the labor market, citizenship, and general human prosperity (Shields). There has been a great debate on how to define equality in education; some would state that it is the legal right of every child to access education, while others evaluate the issue in terms of the educational resources accessible by the student. Having equality in the education system is not concerned with the discrimination subjected by society, social norms, and informal rules. Equal educational opportunities provide the students with the ability to acquire knowledge and particular skills that are vital to cultivate their capacities. Most people link their goals in life with their access to educational facilities or institutions.
What happens when you miss some opportunities?
An article by Emma Gracia and Elaine Weiss states that the social class of a child determines the quality of education they will access. The education inequality gap is majorly inspired by the increasing racial and social class disparities. The research findings are reported after an analysis of the relationship between the social, economic conditions of the children and their cognitive and non-cognitive skills when joining skills. Children from black, Hispanic, and white cultural backgrounds demonstrate different educational outcomes becomes of the inequalities in resources. The income and level of education of the parents also play a significant role in the development of the child. The unequal quality of resources among the races and social status directly shapes the educational outcomes (GarcĆa). The segregation is directly correlated with the gaps experienced in academic progress. The Council on Foreign Relations states that inequality in education results in other fundamental issues in society, such as increased criminal cases, financial instability, and retarded economic growth in the nation. When students do not have equal access to education, most of them are likely to drop out, which reflects on the country's tax base. In the United States, the high school dropouts' income is less compared to that of the graduates. Unequal access to education can be reflected in the future when the person becomes underemployed, thus lowering the tax base. Also, American global competition reduces when the education system experiences inequality. The resources limit the capacity of the students to become innovative and creative. Education inequality weakens the democracy of the nation because people do not access the necessary support they need.
American Education system
The future of society relies on the capability of young people; thus, people need to invest in providing knowledge and skills to the children. The United States education system is becoming worse, with increased levels of inequality. Students from minority groups are more likely to be low performance than those from advantaged families. The education system in America is failing because the majority of the parents are not involved in their children's progress. The teachers manage a large number of students, and they cannot reach out to each student. Students from disadvantaged families lack support from the parents, especially where the caregivers have no higher education level qualifications (Lynch). The case is not different from those in the middle and upper class whose parents have focused on building their careers and earning a pay-check. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the teachers have the challenge to assist the children because 14% of the institutions have exceeded the capacity required. The overcrowded classrooms make it difficult for the teachers to teach effectively and for students to learn. Some educational institutions have adopted technology to enhance educational outcomes. However, some parents cannot afford the opportunities; thus, their children only rely on the teachers.
