The Sustainability of Our Planet
There are so many issues concerning the Earth that are ongoing right now. Several movements across the globe have been launched that aims for a better future for our planet. Multiple platforms educate and provide awareness regarding the serious issue we are currently having right now. It is undeniable that we are already experiencing the side effects of this global-wide problem that we currently have. However, there is also some hindrance for the people who are trying to make advocacy to create and develop a better world. Acceptance regarding their ideology and how to make it possible received a lot of critics and questions not only from the society but also from the government itself. The capabilities of each individual and organization are questioned but that doesn't stop them to continue what they have already started in moving forward to save our planet.
The first movement in saving our planet began with a book titled Silent Spring was written by Rachel Carson that was published in the 1960s in the New York Times. The book focuses on the effects of chemical pesticides in the environment that are largely used in US agriculture to maintain the health of the crop. But Carson would like to emphasize its negative impacts on the environment.
Despite the goal that Carson would like to achieve, which is the lessen the usage of pesticide that concerns not only the environment but also animals and especially humans. Her opinion was invalidated by the community of scientists who are consisted of a male pointing out the lack of Ph.D. that she did not process at that time.
Another point about the argument regarding Carson's idea is because of the Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane or known as DDT, which is used to protect crops, contradicting her idea that this is a safe form of pesticide that is characterized as colorless, odorless, and tasteless.
On June 4 of 1963, Rachel Carson's statement before the Senate Government Operations Subcommittee studying the effects of pesticide spraying where she highlighted that no one understands the effects of pesticide residue stored in our body. She would like to emphasize that this may have a negative reaction when it came to contact with different drugs a person could have bacon repeatedly. Aside from that, she pointed out that the pesticides were only tested in a controlled environment as an experiment which is far from the effects that it has on the human body (Rachel Carson Council, n.d.).
However, due to dedication, she was able to change the mind of the Senate and introduce the things that are being affected by the DDT. This also became the start of awareness among Americans and the movement that aims to save our planet.
Deroberts, N. (2019) created an article the focuses on how the landing on the moon changed our perception regarding our world. Humans made several attempts they reach the moon and create additional studies, however, it does not only give us an idea about heavenly bodies but also emphasizes the beauty of Earth.
The view of Earth from the moon does not only aims to make the humans mesmerized by its beauty, but they would also like the convey a message of how our planet is so vast and should be taken care of not only by organizations and people who are dedicated but it should be a role that must be fulfilled by everyone.
Aside from this achievement, it was seen how far can technology take humanity with its proper usage, it also serves as a goal to maximize technology without harming our planet, hence, help it to survive and sustain its capability of being our home as well as with the next generations. This movement that is performed outside our planet has its dual purpose, we achieved knowledge regarding the lunar surface and at the same time educate people how big and beautiful the world is.
There are thousands of organizations who are trying to implore the relevance of taking care of our planet, they might go into different names and visions but their sole purpose is to ensure that humanity will take a big leap and making a change.
One of the people who have a significant contribution was known it's Lois Marie Gibbs that was born in 1951, she organized the Love Canal concerning her neighborhood in Niagara Falls, NY where they discovered that it was been built in a toxic waste dump. this has been great concern about the health especially the children who live in that area.
Instead of waiting for the government’s action concerning the hazardous waste that is a big threat to their health Lois and her community started to develop methods and strategies, but it organizes the community to become fully aware of the condition. They also assess the possible impacts of this waste on their health.
The government sees this as a serious problem because of multiple cases that have been reported. As a solution the Congress pass a Superfund Act Which is a federal trust that should be used in future cleanups, the fund also helped the families of Love Canal to relocate to a safer place.
This is an example of how small acts can provide big changes especially with dedication and proper organization of the process ensuring that it aims for a better outcome. Aside from Lois Gibbs many people also battled to make a change that will impact not only their community but also the whole society.
Another example is the story of Erin Brockovich who battled with Pacific Gas and Electric Company. The case is because of the contamination concerning hexavalent chromium Do their drinking water. This resulted in a lawsuit that has been controversial as it is the largest amount of settlement that has been paid in the United States history with the amount of $333 million. Different insights that point out the company’s wastewater as a cause of growing cancer patients in the area have been recorded.
