Summary
In the nineteen hundred, many European countries still had territories in African and Asia. One of the territories was British India. The British government controlled the British Indian territory up to nineteen forty-seven when the territory was released to the indigenous people to govern themselves. One of the last things the British colonial government did was draw up a border that divided the territory into two parts, referred to as India, currently the Republic of India, and Pakistan, currently known as the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The division of British India was referred to as the Partition in India. The main reason for writing this paper is to explain the Partition in India and some of the effects on the locals, including the local artist.
After the partition of India, many things were affected. Some of the most notable effects were the division of organizations meant to offer services to the entire region. This included organizations such as the British India Army, the Royal Indian Navy and the Central Treasury. The railways were also affected by the partition of the region. Although these were challenges that people had to face, the most notable issue was the division of the regions according to religion. Pakistan was made up mainly made up of Muslims, while India was made up of Hindu (Kumar 2114). Although the territory was divided to have most of each religious group on one side of the border, some religious institutions and believers of the opposite religion ended up in the wrong country. This led to violent conflict between the two countries and religions in the region for some years.
Analysis
One of the people affected by the partition was an artist known as M. F. Husain. Although he was commonly known as M. F. Husain, his full name was Maqbool Fida Hussain. He was born on seventeenth September nineteen fifteen, in Pandharour, Maharashtra. After his mother died, he was raised by his paternal grandmother before living with his maternal grandfather. While living with his grandfather, he developed an interest in Kufic Calligraphy. He later went to art school at twenty years old in Bombay, current day Mumbai. In nineteen forty-seven, he was involved in the development of Bombay Progressive Artist’s Group, four months after India had gained independence and in the middle of the partition aftermath. One of the partition's effects was that he was accepted greatly due to his art depicting images of freedom and modernism (Herwitz 42). He covered Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Ramayana, British Raj and Indian life in general. One of the challenges that developed was due to his native culture. He was a secular Muslim painting about Indian culture and gods. The greatest issue was that his paintings were accused of showing nude Indian gods. Some of the effects of this had included lawsuits against him, death threats, and he had to leave
