Panic Disorder
Panic disorder is defined as a psychological condition characterized by recurring intense fear followed by other physical signs and symptoms. Its complex reaction affects the lungs, heart, brain, eyes, glands and other major human organs. A person with panic disorder suffers from intense anxiety in several episodes of cases. Other times, a person with panic disorder develops situational or location phobias associated with panic attacks. When the rate of fear increases, it causes agoraphobia. Therefore, this essay focuses on two different treatment methods, their effects comparisons, and the limitations of each.
Treatment reduces the frequency and intensity of the panic attacks, therefore improves the functioning of the body. There are two distinct methods of treating panic disorder; medication and psychotherapy. To be recommended with either of these two treatments, the patient’s physical examination is done where the history, preferences, and the severity of the panic condition are considered. Also, patients with special therapist trainers are considered when treating panic disorder (Shankman et al. 437). Psychotherapy is the recommended first choice treatment and it is a very effective method for understanding the panic disorder. Cognitive behavior therapy helps the patient to learn through experience that the symptoms of panic are less dangerous. In this treatment method, the therapists assist the patient to re-create the disorder symptoms in a safe and gradual repetitive manner. When the panic sensation feels less threatening, the panic attacks start to resolve.
